Who’s Who?
Introducing the Who’s Who? corner of our monthly Newswire…
Each month we’ll interview one of the team here at KN to tell you a bit more about themselves and their role….after all, everyone loves a good nosey don’t they?!
Jacob Mercer, Tax Advisor
Jacob joined the Tax team at Kirk Newsholme in 2016 after completing A-levels and soon started on our Apprenticeship scheme studying ATT, qualifying in 2020. He is currently studying CTA and deals mainly with clients’ corporation tax returns.
Tell us a bit about your role and the firm?
I work in the Tax team as a Tax Advisor and joined as a trainee in 2016 and am currently studying CTA. My main role is dealing with Corporation Tax but I often assist in personal tax affairs as well, it is probably best summarised as ‘making sure the tax man leaves you alone’. My work can vary day to day, mostly it revolves around the preparing of Tax Returns alongside accounts. I work with both the Business Services and Audit teams here so I get to deal with a wide variety of our client base from Sole Traders to very large Companies and everyone in between. I think this connection to clients at a personal level is what sets KN apart from other firms, all our staff care about their clients and are willing to go the extra mile to help
If you weren’t a Tax Advisor what would you be?
I fancy myself a decent chef so I’d like to think I could have a go at doing that professionally, although it would probably just be an excuse to travel the world eating amazing food and being able to pass it off as ‘Research’.
What are you currently watching?
I have just finished “Behind her eyes” on Netflix which is well worth a watch and have recently discovered “Are you the one?” I’m working my way through a backlog of series of that (Think Love Island but they have pre-determined “Perfect” matches they have to find) So basically psychological thriller balanced out with utter trash reality TV.
Where’s your favourite place in the world?
I don’t think I have one favourite place, I’m the sort of person who would prefer to go somewhere new rather than go back to somewhere I have been. I went to New York on a last minute whim a couple of years ago and it was the most exciting place I have ever been and made me want to go back to America and see more of the country. I would also really like to go to Asia, Japan and China in particular, partly for the culture but mainly for the food! I was due to go on a ski trip this year which would have been a new experience which I am now very much looking forward to next year.
What is your favourite food?
I like all food, I spent a year eating vegetarian but had to go back because I felt I was missing out on too much nice food! Pad Thai has become a recent favourite but I think my all-time favourite is a full English breakfast with the most important element being the criminally underrated hash brown!
