Tell us a bit about your role at Kirk Newsholme…
My role in the tax team is to oversee the corporation tax compliance process to ensure our clients’ tax returns are prepared accurately and submitted on a timely basis. Using the experience gained during my time in accountancy, I support our team in learning the technical aspects of corporation tax, help clients minimise tax liabilities within the legislation and support other teams within the firm to help them understand how corporation tax impacts on the day to day running of a business. Having gained a rounded experience over the years (2026 marks 30 years since I began my training contract!) I am able to provide advice to clients on wider tax matters and spot opportunities within the business where tax may be saved. My role is varied with each day offering new tasks and challenges which keeps life interesting.
What would you be if you weren’t working in Tax?
I would be doing something creative I think – as a keen photographer and crafter I enjoy turning my hand to different creative projects from crochet to glass fusing to willow weaving. I have dabbled in a lot of different areas but given how long it takes me to complete a project I’m not sure it would pay very well!
What are you currently reading/watching/listening to?
I have recently watched The Traitors and, having started with Celebrity Traitors before binge watching all the previous series, this is the first non-celebrity series I have watched live as it airs on TV. It has been great fun watching as a family and genuinely not knowing what is to come.
I have varied taste in music but my current “go to” is Mumford and Sons having seen them before Christmas for the third time. I have also been listening to Ray Lamontagne’s Trouble album as we are seeing him later this year at the Albert Hall as part of the album’s anniversary tour.
I am currently reading Beautiful Ugly by Alice Feeney which is a thriller – I love a wide range of genres but will always have at least one book on the go.
Where is your favourite place in the World?
As a Yorkshire girl, I’ve got to say Yorkshire – I am happiest when I am up in the Dales, on the Moors or at the coast with family or friends. I do enjoy going further afield and would always choose to stay near the sea given the option – in particular the Northumbrian or Cornish coasts where the beaches are stunning.
What’s on your bucket list?
To see the Northern Lights in Norway and the Tour de France finish on the Champs Elysees in Paris.
