Who’s Who?

Introducing the Who’s Who? corner of our monthly Newswire…

Each month we’ll interview one of the team here at KN to tell you a bit more about themselves and their role….after all, everyone loves a good nosey don’t they?!

Sam Backhouse – Assistant Accountant, Business Services

Sam joined Kirk Newsholme as a trainee accountant 3 years ago after completing his A-levels.  He works within the Business Services team and is currently studying ACA.

Tell us a bit about your role and how you got into Accounting?

I work in the Business Services team at Kirk Newsholme, which supports businesses mainly with non-audit services such as bookkeeping and VAT returns, year-end statutory accounts for SMEs and management accounts. I really enjoy the variety of clients I deal with and working face to face clients at their own premises. I am also (suffering) part way through my ICAEW studies.

Business & Economics was always my strong point at school (I was the playground sweet seller!), and sort of ‘fell’ into accounting and found KN at the suggestion of a teacher, and after some work experience and an interview the rest is history!

What sets Kirk Newsholme apart from the rest?

Most of our clients at KN are owner-managed businesses – this means that we are involved with people day-to-day who are incredibly invested financially and emotionally in their particular business. Because of this, the staff members here care massively about their clients and are always willing to go the extra mile regardless of the size of the job.

I think this level of care and trust might be hard to find as a firm-wide trait in an accountancy practice.

If you weren’t an accountant what would you be?

Other staff members at KN could vouch that I probably could’ve made a career out of being a professional bowling player if I had the time to practice… otherwise I would be tempted to have a crack at being some sort of journalist – why wouldn’t you want to get paid to watch professional sport, live music or dine out?!

Who would you most like to swap places with for a day?

It would definitely have to be my girlfriend, Emily – mainly so I can live the life of luxury and be treated like royalty for the day.

 What are you currently watching?

I’m a creature of Netflix and have binge watched the likes of Breaking Bad and Black Mirror, and also find Ricky Gervais’ programmes hilarious, alongside Fleabag and Stath Lets Flats. My outside recommendation for people who have Netflix though is a programme called Queer Eye – judge me after you’ve watched it!

What’s on your bucket list?

I’m all about an ‘experience’ having seen England’s cricket World Cup winning side (lose to Sri Lanka) and Elton John perform earlier this year and would say that I am enjoying ticking off music acts that myself and Emily want to see, alongside visiting new cities whilst doing it.

I would love to see Bruce Springsteen or Fleetwood Mac before it was too late, and if I could live 25 years ago David Bowie would be at the top of my bucket list. I am also partial to a bit of Kanye West and Frank Ocean at the moment so they would be up there too.

Holidays I’m reasonably easy going, so long as the weather is nice!
