Whos who?
Introducing the Who’s Who? corner of our monthly Newswire…
Each month we’ll interview one of the team here at KN to tell you a bit more about themselves and their role….after all, everyone loves a good nosey don’t they?!
Jim Meakin – Corporate Tax Consultant
Having only joined the firm earlier this year, Jim has quickly become an invaluable member of the team at KN. Alongside his wealth of knowledge and expertise in the field, he brings with him that distinctive North-east warmth and character! Jim’s specialisms include helping companies and their shareholders and management with the tax issues involved in succession and exit and to optimise their ownership structures.
Tell us a bit about your role and Kirk Newsholme
My role in the tax team is to support Clare and the team and the rest of the firm, as a whole, in delivering tax advisory projects to our clients, primarily on the corporate side. My work revolves mainly around helping businesses and their owners to achieve the optimum business structure and to manage succession and exit.
I enjoy using my experience to support and advise others in the team with some of the trickier tax problems they may have to deal with.
What would you be if you didn’t work in Tax?
I would be a guitar player in a blues band, hopefully earning a living out of my love of playing the guitar. Although a lot of the blues guitar players of old were poor and down and out!
What are you currently reading/watching/listening to?
I am keen to keep up with current affairs via the news media and a good newspaper at the weekend, and of course I have to keep up with developments in the tax world.
But most of all my reading and listening revolves around my love of blues and rock music. People like BB King, Muddy Waters, and the Allman Brothers Band are always on my turntable and playlist and I have a collection of vinyl records which I have built up over the years mainly based around that music which gives me enough listening.
I also enjoy reading political and musical biographies, recent ones being Bob Dylan, Clement Attlee, and Vladimir Putin, which is nothing if not varied! Holiday reading might be a good crime novel by my favourite novelist James Lee Burke.
Where is your favourite place in the World?
I love my home area of Newcastle and Northumberland, especially the beautiful coastline there where we visit regularly.
However my favourite place or places are probably the southern states of the USA because of the musical culture which originates from there and the way of life that goes with it. My wife Joanne and I have travelled there extensively and done several road trips taking in New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville, and a number of the surrounding cities and states. We have also spent several visits exploring obscure blues music joints in Chicago and some of the other big cities. So far we have visited New Orleans five times, the last time being 2019 when we attended the New Orleans Jazzfest.
What’s on your bucket list?
Time to go back to New Orleans and round about, which we were unable to do for some time because of Covid restrictions. Joanne and I are keen to try and get back there next year.
So far we have visited 16 of the 50 mainland states and would like to get round all the other 34!
